I began this site as a means of cataloguing netlabel releases that I listen to and enjoy. Of course, it’s not limited to this, and I also write about the culture around netlabels, interview musicians, and write about digital art I discover and want to share.
I also write music, and you can hear some of my music on noise.me.uk.
I love writing about music and talking to musicians, so I’m starting to dedicate more of my free time to this pursuit. To that end, I also write for Furthernoise. If you want to contact me to write for your magazine or website, you can use my contact form.
I originally started writing in 2000 when someone from Linux.com contacted me to take advantage of my somewhat specialised interest in computer science and arts. These articles have now been archived, and you can read them in the Linux.com Article DB.
Recently, Salon.com linked to this site, in the Audiofile section written by Thomas Bartlett. He was very kind indeed, and said:
It takes a brave soul to sift through all the mediocrity out there, and I for one have very limited patience for wading through endless soggy vistas of ambient electronics, dripping with cheap digital reverb. One such brave soul is Alex Young whose blog Milieu is dedicated to freely downloadable, public-domain music, with a focus on music from netlabels.
I also write software, and I currently work for a company near Battersea Park, called Aardvark Media Limited. I keep a diary on this subject, at work.alexyoung.org.
I live in London with my girlfriend.
