64Chaos - Time-S will amaze and confound you. It’s electronic music from the world of 8bit consoles, and if you look at their instrument list on their homepage, you’ll see a NES, Gameboy, commodore c64, Amiga (actually 16bit and 32bit) and an Atari VCS2600. That’s not the amazing/confounding thing here, however, as many of you will be aware of the popularity of this kind of old skool electronic music: it’s the odd mix of French and Japanese vocals and cult themes, coupled with fearsome 8bit experimentalism and a great sense of humour that amazed me. Plus they use Amigas, and I really miss my old Amigas.
Have a listen to the last track, Zeburaman, I really love the sound used for the melody.

Daniel Stefanik - Suite L.E. is released on both Instabil and 1bit Wonder, in conjunction. Daniel Stefanik has a long history for a musician in his field, he’s been working since the mid 90s, and now runs the netlabel Instabil as well as playing live in several clubs. You may notice a certain level of professionalism evident in the composition and mixing of these tracks, but if you’re into more experimental sounds don’t be put off; Stefanik isn’t afraid to veer away from the expected.
He’s also not afraid to jump around dynamic ranges, Suite L.E. is packed with surprises and subtle variations. This seems to be Stefanik’s main area of interest, and he does tend to rely on a handful of compositional devices in this respect. However, Stefanik’s compositions are succinct and layered in ways that seem to hold your interest. Some tracks, such as danse fi and dre kamnta introduce new elements slowly, amongst looped themes, but occasionally grind to a distorted halt and deviate dramatically. These deviations, however, are skillfully executed and never seem too far away from the context of the rest of the piece.
The tracks are generally quite slow and melancholic. They feature influences from field recording and glitch, but more strongly electronica. The timbres are occasionally reminiscent of Autechre or earlier Aphex Twin, but the melodies are more direct. The bio for Stefanik suggests dub and minimal/detroit techno influences, but it’s easier to find comparisons with people like Autechre. If you’re interested in electronica in general, download this.
To download this EP, you have to use both label’s sites: see 1 Bit Wonder’s release page and Instabil’s release page.
